Crystal clear alpine water, verdant forests, and a backdrop of stunning mountains...welcome to the Hintersteinersee in Tirol, a must-see destination whilst on holiday at Hütte Waldzeit.
Located within the borders of the Wilder Kaiser Nature Reserve, a protected area of natural beauty, the Hintersteinersee is a picture-perfect destination.
The Hintersteinersee is just 25 minutes from Hütte Waldzeit and is easy to reach by car. The drive is stunning too! Parking at the lake is limited, so if you’re travelling by car, we’d recommend driving there early to secure a spot. Alternatively, in summer, you can park in the village of Sheffau and take the shuttle bus to the lake instead.
Not sure what to do when you get there? These are our recommendations to make the most of your day trip to the Hintersteinersee:
Take a dip in the lake: Have you ever tried wild swimming? We promise you'll love it! Given the lake is fed predominately from meltwater, it can be a little fresh. But as soon as you start paddling, you'll warm up! Cold water swimming is so good for your health…so not only is it a stunning spot to swim, but you’ll be also doing your health a favour too! If you love to wild swim, check out some of the other great spots near Hütte Waldzeit here.
Take a hike: The gentle walk around the lake is just 4km. It’s an easy trail that the whole family can enjoy. The path is a gravel track in parts, so make sure you’ve got proper walking shoes or trainers. Flipflops are definitely not a good idea! If you’re feeling more adventurous, explore one of the more difficult trails that head up in the mountains. These offer some incredible views over the lake!
Tuck into some Austrian food: After you’ve worked up an appetite, head to one of the cafés or mountain alms for some lunch! The small café on the lake offers a range of drinks, snacks, and ice-creams. If you’re looking for something a little heartier, head to one of the mountain alms for a Tiroler Gröstl!
The Hintersteinersee isn’t just a destination reserved for summer either. Each season is stunning! Wildflowers scatter the meadows in spring, in autumn the trees are crazy shades of yellow and orange, and in winter the whole area is covered in a breathtaking blanket of snow.
